Despite great performances in the Championship, Dwight Gayle has struggled to make a name for himself with Newcastle United in the Premier League.

It won’t be a surprise to hear that Newcastle United are looking to part ways with their striker Dwight Gayle this summer, who simply hasn’t been able to cut in the Premier League.
The Sun previously claimed that 28-year-old Gayle is free to leave St James’ Park before August 8 deadline as the club are holding out for a fee of £15 million for his services.
On Tuesday, Newcastle smashed their club-record transfer record when they secured the services of Hoffenheim hitman Joelinton for a fee believed to be in the region of £40 million, as reported by BBC Sport.
The Brazilian’s arrival has made it even more likely that Gayle will be heading for the exit door in these next few weeks, but are Newcastle being unrealistic when it comes to his transfer fee?
Gayle has played 99 games in England’s top-tier during his career, where he has netted 21 goals. By contrast, he has played 100 games in the Championship and scored 59 goals [transfermarkt].
Given that record, it is more than likely that a team from the second tier will push for his signature rather than a team in the Premier League.

Last season, Gayle was on-loan at West Brom, where he enjoyed a successful spell at the Hawthorns by scoring 24 goals.
Making a return to the Midlands outfit seems unlikely because they have just recently splashed £8 million on Kenneth Zahore [BBC Sport], so it would be a surprise if they paid Newcastle £15 million for Gayle now.
Recently relegated Cardiff didn’t splash the cash in the Premier League, so they won’t do in the Championship. Whereas Fulham have Aleksandar Mitrovic in their ranks, so they don’t need another big-money purchase upfront.
Stoke City are already stockpiled in the attacking department, whilst Leeds United have Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford on their books.
Simply put, there are not many teams that would take Gayle on for such an unrealistic price, but lower it, or even offer him out on loan then many teams will pounce.
