Will Newcastle and West Brom regret not pushing for Fabian Delph deal this summer?

Both Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion were linked with moves for Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph during the summer.

Few in the summer would have predicted that heading into this international break, Fabian Delph would have worked his way back into Pep Guardiola’s plans and would be in line to earn a new contract with Manchester City – but that is exactly what has happened.

According to The Sun, the former Aston Villa man is set to begin talks imminently over a fresh deal at the Etihad, after impressing enormously since he came back into the side in the unfamiliar role of left-back.

And yet, The Sun reported in July that City were ready to sell the midfielder in the summer, meaning the likes of West Brom and Newcastle could have reportedly landed him for just £14 million.

The Birmingham Mail reported in September that the Baggies had been interested in the 27-year-old during that window, so perhaps Tony Pulis and Rafa Benitez will be ruing the fact that they did not take a chance on Delph when they had the opportunity, as there is surely no way that they would be able to land him for a similar fee anytime soon.

Neither Newcastle or West Brom will probably have any complaints about the options they have in the middle of the park, but it could certainly be argued that depth is what is going to help the mid-table pair push towards the heavyweights in the division.

And Delph has shown with his form this season that he could not only have brought plenty of quality to their options in the middle of the park but he may have also been able to help in other areas of the squad.

And for that reason, spending £14 million on him may have seemed like a big fee initially, but it appears that he would have been able to repay that faith fairly quickly and eventually made the deal look like a major bargain.

But unfortunately for West Brom and Newcastle, their inability to bring him to either The Hawthorns or St James’ Park during the summer looks set to prove costly as the midfielder’s value appears set to only head in one direction if he continues to play as he has done so far.
