Former Leeds United boss Garry Monk said Charlie Taylor had been terribly advised, has he been too?

Garry Monk stunned Leeds United and their supporters last week by handing in his resignation at the club.

Monk’s reasons for quitting have not been formally disclosed, and his decision has tainted a very promising and credible first season he oversaw at the club as head coach.

Just a fortnight earlier Monk had slammed defender Charlie Taylor for betraying the club’s supporters by refusing to play for the club on the final day of the season against Wigan.

Taylor was eyeing a summer move when his contract runs down, and his actions were seen as unforgivable.

Monk told SkySports: “I think he’s been terribly advised…I think he’s been poorly advised all season.

“He’s not very experienced in these situations, and you need proper guidance, and people around you who can help you do things right.”

It remains to be seen whether Monk has dropped a similar clanger regarding his own future, with his agent handing in his resignation to the club.

The Mirror report he is among the favourites to take over at fellow Championship club Middlesbrough, who have already sounded him out.

It would be one thing if Monk made a smart career move by jumping from Leeds into the Premier League, but to join another Championship side would start to feel like a betrayal.

Attention will turn to the new dawn provided by Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Monk saw something he didn’t like and backed off, but the Italian is well connected and has strong finances. All Monk had was just a gut feel of what the future could be like; he did not even stick around to try.

If he provides the platform for Leeds’ next manager to make a big success of the job, Monk could seriously regret his decision.

We wonder what Taylor makes of it…
