Steven Gerrard’s Scottish Premiership giants Rangers reportedly offered Edson Mexer a three-year contract when he left Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

Another season, another era at Bordeaux.

This year marks a decade since Les Girodins last won the Ligue 1 title and, as long as Paris Saint-Germain are flush with cash, a return to the top of French football will remain frustratingly out of reach.

But the least Bordeaux could do is challenge for Europe – or the top half, for that matter. And with two experienced, battle-scarred defenders arriving at the Matmut Atlantique, head coach Paulo Sousa really has no excuses for not improving drastically on last season’s 14th placed finish.

After forcing a move away from Arsenal and ruining his legacy in North London, Laurent Koscielny is now starting afresh in Bordeaux.

And his first task is to forge a formidable partnership with a man who could, in an alternative universe, be lining up at Rangers instead.

According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers offered Mexer a three-year deal in May with his contract at Rennes about to expire. The 30-year-old Mozambique international was even spotted posing for photos alongside Gers manager Steven Gerrard.

But the lure of Bordeaux, and their so-called ‘ambitious project’, proved impossible to ignore. Mexer told WebGirodins that moving to the 2009 Ligue 1 champions wasn’t a question of money but glory instead.

The cold hard facts, however, are these; Bordeaux aren’t going to come anywhere near the title this season. They certainly won’t be playing European football for 12 months at least. Rangers, however, look closer than ever to ending Celtic’s reign and are just two games away from qualifying for the Europa League group stages.

Maybe Mexer underestimated the project on offer at Ibrox.
