Michael Kightly has been released by Burnley – but Leeds United know just how dangerous he can be.
Fortunately, Michael Kightly’s stand-out loan at Burton Albion in the second half of the season has put him firmly in the shop window at the perfect time. Because, as reported by the Burton Mail, parent club Burnley have released the 31-year-old upon the expiry of his contract.
Playing 12 times for The Brewers between January and May, Kightly played a major role in their outstanding push for survival. His four goals inspired victories against Wolves, Norwich and Leeds United, while his set-piece threat and expert deliveries supplemented an otherwise average side with a touch of Premier League class.
Therefore, Burton fans will surely be pleading for Kightly to stay on a permanent basis.
However, there should be no shortage of suitors for the one-time Wolves favourite. And with Leeds in dire need for an added dash of creativity, you wonder whether his superb performance against them in April will encourage a shock summer move.
Bursting through Leeds’ usually solid backline with a fantastic first touch before clipping a clever finish into the far corner, Kightly’s late clincher not only secured Burton a second season in the Championship but also shredded their opposition’s play-off hopes.
And with veteran Spaniard Pablo Hernandez well off the boil in the business end of the season, manager Garry Monk could have only dreamed of a player with Kightly’s ability to produce something out of nothing as The Whites toiled at the Pirelli.
Furthermore, with loanees Hadi Sacko, Alfonso Pedraza and Mo Barrow all returning to their parent clubs, Leeds are even more desperate for reinforcements in the final third.
Therefore, Monk could do worse than to remember Kightly’s influential display a month ago. When fit, there are few more dangerous players in the division after all.
