Will Manchester United be awarded the Premier League title? Many fans have been asking after Manchester City were charged.

The Red Devils lost out on the 2011/12 and the 2017/18 Premier League titles after finishing second to their bitter rivals, while the same happened in the 2020/21 campaign.

However, the Citizens could now have those titles stripped if found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules, after being hit with over 100 charges.

So, will Manchester United be awarded the titles? Let’s take a look at what past incidents of a similar nature suggest could happen…

Will Manchester United be awarded the Premier League title?

Well, it certainly seems possible, based on what happened in Italy back in the 2005/06 campaign.

Juventus saw their 2005/06 Serie A title stripped after it was discovered they had been involved in a match fixing scandal, which has since been famously coined as Calciopoli.

The scandal saw four more Italians teams penalised for attempting to influence results by picking certain referees.

AC Milan finished second that year, but seeing as they were also involved, the 2005/06 Serie A title was awarded to Inter Milan, despite the fact they finished third – 15 points behind Juventus.

As detailed by the BBC, Juventus lodged an appeal in 2019 to get the title back, although to this day, it has gone down as a win for Inter Milan.

Therefore, it would seem likely that Manchester United are awarded the 2011/12 and 2017/18 Premier League titles, although it all depends on whether Manchester City are found guilty.

Manchester United could also be awarded the 2020/21 title, but the Premier League’s four-year investigation is in regards to alleged rule breaches from 2009 to 2018, so anything beyond that year may require a fresh investigation.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Manchester United could add to their 13 Premier League titles if Manchester City are found guilty.
