Since joining Leicester City from Hull over Sunderland, goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic has not even featured in a single Premier League matchday squad.
Eldin Jakupovic spent the vast majority of his five years at Hull City warming the bench. The goalkeeper may have featured 22 times in an impressive Premier League season during the 2016/17 campaign but that campaign was very much an anomalie.
Jakupovic appeared in just 11 league games in his four other seasons at the KCom Stadium. Therefore, with the taste of regular first-team football on his lips, you’d expect that Jakupovic would do anything to avoid reverting to a backup role once again when it became clear that he would be leaving Hull upon their relegation to the Championship.
Instead, however, the one-time Swiss international hasn’t played a single game since his £2 million move to Leicester City, per the Leicester Mercury.
Jakupovic would have arrived at the King Power knowing he would be behind Kasper Schmeichel in the pecking order but the fact he has not been included in any of Leicester’s 11 Premier League matchday squads this season is damning.
It’s a concerning stat, particularly with Jakupovic in the autumn of his career at the age of 33.
Forgotten man
While Sunderland are toiling at the bottom of the Championship, without a manager and stuck in seemingly permanent crisis, Wearside may have been a better home for goalkeeper whose top flight career looks over at Leicester already.
Sky Sports reported that Sunderland wanted the former Leyton Orient loanee in the summer. And with both Jason Steele and Robbin Ruiter doing little to convince between the sticks, there’s little doubt that Jakupovic, for the first time in English football, would have been an undisputed number one.
Surely he’d take starting for a struggling club over becoming one of the top flight’s forlorn forgotten men.
