Leeds United failed to land Swansea City striker McBurnie in the summer but the 21-year-old is now on the radar of Aston Villa.
It is no surprise that Oli McBurnie has emerged as a January target for Aston Villa, according to the Sun on Sunday (3rd December page 65).
A long-term injury to Jonathan Kodjia has left Villa light in attack and, with Financial Fair Play restrictions limiting spending, owner Tony Xia admitted to the Birmingham Mail last week that loan signings would be the order of the day.
And who better to bring in than a striker who scored 20 goals for Swansea City’s Under-23s this season, winning the Premier League 2 Player of the Year award in the process, and is crying out for a chance to show what he can do in the senior game?
But with McBurnie linked with a move to Villa, you wonder whether this will elicit a response from Leeds United – the fellow Championship giants who were interested in signing the Scottish youngster in the summer.
The Sun claimed in August that McBurnie was on Leeds’ radar after a stellar season for Swansea in 2016/17. And with Leeds seemingly in need of one more striker in the January transfer window, McBurnie should again come into consideration.
The 21-year-old may have played just 83 minutes of Premier League football this season but his form for the second string remains as impressive as ever. McBurnie has nine goals in six games, including a hat-trick against the much-vaunted Chelsea reserves in October.
So with Villa preparing their move, Leeds may end up kicking themselves if McBurnie plays a crucial part in the play-off race in the second half of the season.
