Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa desperately needs to bring a centre-back to Elland Road this summer, but should he regret failing to lure Reece Burke to Elland Road from West Ham United?

Matthew Pennington has returned to Everton after a frustrating loan with Leeds, while Paudie O’Connor has gone on loan to Blackpool. Conor Shaughnessy still remains somewhat of a rookie, and has just come back from a long-term injury.

The Mirror claimed back in May that both Leeds and Scottish giants Rangers were interested in signing the 21-year-old centre-back, after a decent loan spell with Bolton Wanderers last season.

However, Leeds and Rangers are both set to miss out on Burke, with the Sun reporting on Monday that Leeds’ local rivals Hull City are set to beat Derby County to the £1.5million signing of the England youth international.

Nigel Adkins will be keen to bring some new players to the KCOM Stadium this summer after a disappointing campaign that saw the Tigers finish in a lowly 18th place.

But at just £1.5million and with Burke showing plenty of potential to become a top centre-back in English football when he hits his peak, Leeds should regret failing to add the defender as cover for Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson.

Burke has shown during his 35 Championship appearances with Bolton and Wigan that he is more than capable of impressing in England’s second division and at such a young age, he is only going to get better with experience.

Hull will be hoping that he builds on his potential, and Leeds will now be forced to watch from afar as the exciting Burke shows what every other party will be missing out on.
