Speaking on The Red Agenda Podcast, James Pearce has been speaking about Liverpool’s midfield and the summer transfer window.

The Reds’ midfield is rather interesting at the moment. They have three established key players, but two of those are ageing, while their fringe midfielders are entering the final year of their contracts.

There are some big decisions to make this summer, and according to Pearce, the likelihood is that at least one midfielder will be departing the club in the summer window.

What’s been said?

Pearce broke down Liverpool’s midfield situation.

“Milner is obviously considering his options with the age he’s at, thinking whether or not he’ll feature much next season. Henderson has a few years left in him, Fabinho will be a mainstay in the midfield for years to come and Thiago is the wrong side of 30 now,” Pearce said.

“We spoke earlier about Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain, that’s an intriguing one for me, what do you do there? Do you give out new contracts this summer or do you move them on? Or do you accept they’ll leave for nothing next year. The midfield is an area I see Liverpool reinforcing this summer, because the likelihood is that one of those midfielders will leave, if not two.”

Not the end of the world

Pearce says that Liverpool may reinforce their midfield due to impending departures this summer, but do they really need to?

Of course, signing new players is exciting, but if two of Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain or Keita leave, then surely that’s a chance to give Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Tyler Morton a more pronounced role in the squad?

Liverpool have three fine young midfielders in the team right now, and if there are departures, the Reds should be fine.
