Rangers linked striker Cedric Itten is on the verge of leaving Swiss outfit St Gallen, president Matthias Huppi has admitted to Tagblatt.

When one door closes, another opens.

And, as Florian Kamberi turned down the chance to re-join Rangers in favour of a move to St Gallen, it seems that the Hibernian-owned forward is set to replace an Ibrox-bound goal-machine at his new club.

Because, as Tagblatt have pointed out, Kamberi will fill an Itten-shaped void in St Gallen’s front line, with the Basel-born 23-year-old closing in on a shock move to Ibrox.

“Cedric Itten will leave us,” president Huppi said when asked about the speculation.

“As long as there is no signature (on the contract), we cannot reveal anything yet (about his destination). It is only certain that he will not play for FC St.Gallen next season.”

Talk about bowing out on a high.

Itten scored 20 goals in 36 games for St Gallen in 2019/20, helping them finish ahead of his hometown club Basel and behind champions Young Boys in the runners-up spot.

The 6ft 2ins targetman has also forced his way into the Switzerland national team in recent months, scoring three times in two caps.

Clearly, Rangers are getting a man who knows where the net is.

And, with his giant frame and aerial prowess (he scored five headed goals last season), Itten should give Steven Gerrard something a little different in the final third.
