Liverpool face a busy summer in the transfer market- they need a successful one after a disastrous one last season.
It is no secret that the money Kenny Dalglish spent last summer is looking like a wasted opportunity.
In fact, when disappointed Liverpool fans reflect on Dalglish’s reign so far, it is the pivotal moment which through mediocre signings, has led to their present malaise.
So this summer the pressure is on.
Let’s say Liverpool go out and sign some of the highly rated European talent they have been linked with. What then?
Say two of Iker Muniain, Luuk de Jong, or Matias Suarez. All surely and instant improvement to the forward line.
Let’s also say they succeed in giving Liverpool the lift required to break in the top four next season.
Will Liverpool fans give Kenny Dalglish the credit for making the signings? Or has the damage to his reputation been done?
Many Liverpool fans believe Dalglish ‘bought British’ not just out of principal, but because his knowledge of the European game is not very extensive.
Would the credit for making such signings go to director of football Damien Comolli, who showed at Tottenham he had an eye for assisting with transfers from the continent.
Not all were a success, but Luka Modric and Kevin Prince-Boateng were among the best players he brought to the club, even if the latter did not get a real opportunity.
The further Liverpool suffer this season, the further entrenched in their positions supporters will become in favour or against Kenny Dalglish; already his future is polarising fans.
In a poll on our website last week, 62 per cent of fans who voted said they wanted Dalglish to quit this summer.
So even if he turns it around with good signings when this season is over- fans may attribute the success to Comolli rather than Dalglish.
