Hayes only moved to Celtic during the summer transfer window.

Celtic’s Jonny Hayes could have been forgiven for feeling slightly optimistic upon hearing news of Patrick Roberts’ injury lay-off.

Roberts could miss up to three months for the Bhoys, after suffering a thigh injury against Motherwell last month.

But in the three games the Englishman has missed so far, Hayes has only started once for Brendan Rodgers’ side – appearing as a substitute twice and not featuring at all on one occasion.

Reports then that Rodgers is hoping to bring Chelsea’s Charly Musonda to Celtic Park in January (Scottish Sun) are sure to have dashed Hayes’ spirit somewhat.

A winger himself, Musonda would likely take over from Roberts as the Irishman’s primary competition should he indeed arrive in Glasgow.

So what next for Hayes? Could he seek a move of his own next month? He’d perhaps be wise to, if Rodgers is willing to let him go as opposed to hoarding his services in the event of an injury crisis.

He is unlikely to be short of suitors if so, with several English clubs credited with interest in the summer.

Impressing elsewhere could be his best route back to Celtic’s first team.
