Liverpool midfielder Shelvey scored his first goal for the club last night- are there many more to come?
The £1.7 million signing of Jonjo Shelvey in May 2010 was Rafa Benitez’ parting gift to Liverpool.
Time will tell if the player is one the club should be grateful to their former manager for or not.
Based on his limited showings so far, we’d say he looks a better prospect than both Jay Spearing and £20 million man Jordan Henderson.
Shelvey may have missed a sitter against Norwich a fortnight ago which he apologised for, and put in a poor display against Fulham, but at 20-years-old he will learn.
At Charlton he displayed immense natural talent, becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer at 16, going onto score seven goals for the club before being snapped up by Liverpool.
His goal against Chelsea last night was a fine one, and like many of Liverpool’s players- he seemed to thrive with the pressure off.
That alone is not going to be good enough for Liverpool, and Anfield there will nearly always be pressure, and Shelvey has to learn how to handle it.
At 20, there is plenty of time for him to progress, and the signs he has shown this season have at times been positive.
He showed on loan at Blackpool that he is easily good enough if not too good for Championship football, bagging six goals in 10 games.
We believe he is good enough to play in the Premier League, and just needs time and patience to be able to show it.
However we’d be interested to see what Liverpool fans think of him? Can he make it?
Is it too early to tell? As far as we can see there is no risk and all win involved when it comes to Liverpool keeping him, especially considering how cheap he was brought in for.
