Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez brought in a lot of players last summer, with some proving to be more successful than others, but could one ultimately prove to be the catalyst for long-term success at St James’ Park?

While Dwight Gayle has taken the headlines and Matt Ritchie has proved to be a canny addition, Isaac Hayden’s influence has gone under the radar to an extent.

Newcastle fans know exactly how important the 21-year-old has been since his summer switch from Arsenal, and his recent ankle surgery is a bitter blow just when they need him the most.

Next season, when Newcastle are expected to be back in the top flight, Hayden will have the chance to prove Arsenal were wrong to let him go, and given his age and his innate talent he has the potential to become a St James’ Park great in the years ahead.

Considering how young he is, Hayden set about making a name for himself at Newcastle in impressive fashion and with the summer to recover and a full pre-season to get back to match fitness, there is every chance he could be one of the club’s most important players next year and beyond.
