Aaron Mooy has been superb for Huddersfield since moving from Man City – and Pablo Mari should be on their radar too.
Did any team in English football make a better signing in the last year than Huddersfield Town’s deal for Aaron Mooy?
Not only was the Australian international The Terriers’ stand-out player as the Yorkshire giants earned promotion to the Premier League for the first time last season, Mooy has also been their most impressive performer in 2017/18 with David Wagner’s side sitting pretty in tenth.
Not bad for a player who cost just £8 million from Manchester City this summer, per Sky Sports, after that excellent 2016/17 loan spell at the John Smith’s Stadium.
And with the Daily Mail reporting that another highly-rated City talent Pablo Mari could be up for grabs in January, the success of Mooy should encourage Huddersfield to take a close look at the 6ft 3ins centre-back.
City signed Mari from Gimnastic in 2016 and loaned him out to Eredivisie side NAC Breda this summer. Captaining the side and earning a place in the league’s team of the month for October, the Spaniard’s eye-catching displays have earned him plenty of admirers from the Premier League.
Especially as he has a low buyout clause in his contract.
And while Zanka Jorgensen and particularly Christopher Schindler have really stood out for Huddersfield in the top flight, there is a lack of top flight quality in reserve with the injury-hit Michael Hefele and Michael Crainie providing back-up.
Mari, then, could represent another astute addition for a Huddersfield side whose impressive recruitment has been key to their hitherto unforeseen success in recent times. If the defender can produce half the impact Mooy has had, he would be a really useful member of Wagner’s squad.
