Few players would have watched Harry Winks’ England debut with as much interest as his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Josh Onomah.

After all, the young midfielders broke through at White Hart Lane at around the same time and in time they are expected to feature regularly together for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

However, while Winks remained in North London and is becoming an increasingly important player for Tottenham this season, Onomah headed out on loan to Aston Villa, where he started as a regular before slipping down the pecking order under Steve Bruce.

Onomah will have watched Winks’ increased influence with interest. He will know that if he performs well in the months ahead, he can return to Tottenham and stake a claim of his own, both for club and – eventually – for country.

The two are very different and, on early evidence, Winks is considerably more advanced with a skill-set and maturity on the ball that already marks him out.

That said, Villa could benefit considerably if Onomah sees Winks’ development and wants to follow suit.

He started as he will mean to go on when Villa defeated Fulham this weekend, returning to the starting XI and performing brilliantly throughout.

He was one of Villa’s standout players on the day, just when they needed him the most, and there is no reason why Onomah cannot play a significant role in firing the Villans to promotion, making his emphatic statement for a future starting role at Tottenham in the process.

Tottenham do not need to be the only club to benefit from their impress array of youngsters, with Villa knowing they are one great campaign away from a return to the top flight.
