Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers look set to miss out on Everton’s Kieran Dowell, who is on his way to the Championship with Sheffield United.

For the second time in just a few months, Rangers look set to miss out on an exciting young talent to Sheffield United.
The Scottish Daily Mail (24 June, back page) claimed back in July that Steven Gerrard had made a number of approaches to bring Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer Ben Woodburn to Ibrox on loan – only for the fresh-faced Welsh international to make the switch to Bramall Lane instead.
And it seems that history is about to repeat itself.
Gerrard admitted this month that he has been watching the exciting Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell (Sun) but it seems that he is set to follow in Woodburn’s footsteps, swapping Merseyside for the Steel City, according to The Sun (21 December, page 64).
But considering how badly Woodburn has fared under Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, it remains to be seen whether Dowell has made a similar mistake.

Despite the 19-year-old’s undoubted potential, he has made just one Championship start for The Blades with Wilder preferring more experienced options up front. Compare this to Gerrard, who has shown a willingness to throw young players in at the deep end if he thinks they are good enough.
So could Dowell be set for a similar challenge to prove himself at Sheffield United?
Fortunately, the England U21 international is already proven in the Championship, having scored nine goals on loan at Nottingham Forest last season.
