Everton’s reported summer target scored twice in the Champions League this week.
Vincent Aboubakar scored his first two goals for Besikas in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Cameroonian hitman netted twice in the Turkish giants’ 3-2 win away to Napoli last night in a performance which might be worrying Everton boss Ronald Koeman.
According to The Mail, Everton were in talks to sign the Porto striker – who is on loan at Besiktas – and the report later claimed that the 24-year-old was interested in the move.
For whatever reason, Aboubakar, who netted 17 times in all competitions last season, did not end up joining the Toffees and in August he signed with Besiktas for the season.
But his brace away to a side like Napoli could suggest that a special season awaits him, and the Dutch manager might track him a little more closely than he may have before last night.
Of course, Everton could still sign him next summer if he enjoys a goal-laden campaign in Turkey, but will it be for the £16 million which was initially quoted by The Mail?
His stock will have gone up considerably after impressing in a competition like the Champions League, and if he continues to do so then so will his value.
Koeman still needs a couple of strikers – including perhaps a long-term replacement for Romelu Lukaku – and although Aboubakar is far from a proven talent, the signs on Wednesday suggest that the ex-Southampton boss might regret that a summer move never materialised.
