Motherwell star Louis Moult was reportedly on Derby County’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.
Derby County suffered with a rather obvious Achilles heel last season. The lowest goalscorers in the top half of the Championship, The Rams’ failure to build up ahead of steam and make a push for the play-offs at any point during the season was majorly impacted by the lack of a prolific striker.
But despite failing to find the back of the net during Tuesday’s frustrating 1-0 home defeat to Ipswich Town, Gary Rowett’s side are a far more potent attacking threat in 2017/18. Only four teams can better their tally of 29 Championship goals with David Nugent, Sam Winnall and 11-goal talisman Matej Vydra all chipping in to good effect.
So it remains to be seen whether Derby will renew their interest in Motherwell’s prolific hitman Louis Moult as the January transfer window rolls around. The Scottish Sun claimed in May that The Rams were keen and, since then, Moult has gone from strength to strength.
After netting 15 goals in each of his last two league seasons for Motherwell, Moult has eight already this campaign and is leading the Golden Boot chase ahead of the likes of Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths and Alfredo Morelos.
And as he is out of contract in the summer, speculation suggests that Moult could be available on a cut-price deal in January. Per the Scottish Sun, Championship rivals Millwall and Brentford are keen while Rangers have been linked for some time.
Rangers, who have seen Eduardo Herrera struggle badly and Morelos’ goals dry up, appear to be crying out for a striker proven in the Scottish game. Moult even scored twice against The Gers in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup last month.
But it remains to be seen whether they will have competition from a Derby side who have finally found form in front of goal.
