David Unsworth might well have missed his big chance in management already and must now wait for another opportunity.
David Unsworth spent the majority of his playing career at Everton before landing a coaching role at Goodison Park.
And so he must have dreamt of the opportunity to manage the Toffees first team as he has in recent weeks.
But that dream has become a nightmare and, with Sam Allardyce set to take over, according to The Daily Mail, Unsworth must wonder what his future holds.
It is clear that the Everton job was too big for Unsworth at this formative stage of his managerial career but, having failed so spectacularly, there are unlikely to be a number of other offers.
Prior to this extended spell as interim manager, the 44-year-old had experienced mixed spells as caretaker boss at both Everton and Preston North End.
Handed this opportunity due to his good work with the Toffees’ under-23 side, Unsworth has not impressed and must now be wondering if he should have instead taken his first steps into management away from the bright lights of the Premier League.
He would certainly benefit from a return to Everton’s youth set-up, but his plan cannot be to stay in that role forever.
Unsworth must now be wondering if any club would be willing to take a risk on a young manager who looked way out of his depth in the top flight.
