The Sunderland manager worked with the former Birmingham City man at international level

Duncan Watmore of Sunderland is injured during the Premier League match between Sunderland and Leicester City at Stadium of Light on December 3, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

Duncan Watmore’s injury has left Sunderland with a shortage of options out wide.

But with little money to work with in the coming transfer window, Sunderland manager Chris Coleman may have to get creative.

That’s where David Cotterill could come in.

Cotterill is free to sign for a new club – for whom he can be registered to play as soon as the window reopens – following his Birmingham City exit this week.

According to a Birmingham club statement, the winger – who has scored or made a goal every 3.5 Championship matches on average – did not feature in the long-term plans of namesake Blues boss, Steve Cotterill, formerly of Sunderland of course.

But with only Callum McManaman and Aiden McGeady to last him until the summer, Coleman – who failed to name Cotterill in only a handful of his Wales squads – may find that one man’s trash is another’s treasure.

That Birmingham fans were sad to see him go seems to speak volumes. And surely, he would love to get his own back, by keeping Sunderland up at his old club’s expense.
