The Leeds United youngster looks like the real deal but he could struggle for starts in the league.
Leeds United fans did not need long to realise just how good summer signing Jay-Roy Grot has the potential to be, with his 20-minute cameo against Nottingham Forest suggesting they have signed a star in the making.
Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, the competition for places at Elland Road means he is unlikely to get many starts in the league, at least to begin with, as Ezgjan Alioski, Pablo Hernandez and Samu Saiz have the attacking midfield positions taken care of and Pierre-Michel Lasogga, Kemar Roofe and Pawel Cibicki will be competing for the lone position up front.
That said, there could be an imminent chance for Grot to prove his worth from the outset when Leeds take on Burnley in the third round of the EFL Cup later this month.
Somewhat ironically, Grot could come up against former Leeds player Chris Wood, whose move to Burnley prompted a flurry of late activity in Yorkshire, and on early evidence the Whites got the better end of the deal despite the New Zealand international’s impact last season.
Grot is a battering ram of a footballer, with pace that belies his stature and an eye for goal that is only going to improve as he gets older.
He showed against Forest that he is not afraid to run at opponents and he is not going to be bullied despite not yet reaching his twenties.
Leeds will wan to progress in the cup but their focus is promotion back to the top flight and the Whites now have a second team with the talent to give most teams in the country a decent game.
Grot deserves a start to show what he can do and in just 13 days he could get it.
