Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers have brought Jon Flanagan to Ibrox. Should Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic have moved for the former Liverpool full-back?

Rangers have been quite busy in the summer transfer window so far, and manager Steven Gerrard added another new face to his Gers squad by completing the signing of Jon Flanagan on a free transfer following his release from Liverpool.

Flanagan has become Rangers’ seventh signing of the summer and has signed a two-year contract with the Ibrox club.

The full-back is a very talented and promising footballer, and although he could not be a success at Liverpool, the England international is only 25 years of age and can only improve working under his former Anfield teammate Steven Gerrard.

Rangers did not exactly need Flanagan as they do have enough in the full-back area, but it is clear that Gerrard wants more competition in his squad and did not hesitate to move for the 25-year-old once he became.

Celtic could also do with a new right-back in the summer transfer window, with Mikael Lustig in his early 30s, Cristian Gamboa not fancied by manager Brendan Rodgers, and Anthony Ralston only 19.

Former Liverpool manager Rodgers has told Sky Sports that “availability and affordability” are two main conditions for him to make new signings.

Flanagan was both available and affordable, so why did Celtic not make a move for the former Liverpool full-back?

Rodgers worked with the 25-year-old at Liverpool, and he will have know his potential and calibre.

Celtic could rue not going for Flanagan, now that he is at their bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers.
