Highly rated St Mirren winger Kyle McAllister joined Derby County in January.

With the January transfer window now firmly shut and behind us, both Celtic and Rangers fans will be looking back at their club’s transfer business with differing opinions. Celtic brought in only Eboue Kouassi from Krasnodar, where as Rangers brought in a number of players on loan, such as Jon Toral and Emerson Hyndman.

Rangers’ favouring of the loan market, as opposed to attempting to bring players in on permanent deals, has upset some Gers fans, who would rather see permanent Rangers players donning the shirt each week. Celtic fans were also irritated by the club’s lack of transfer activity, although the club aren’t currently in a position where they desperately need to strengthen.

Sets of fans might become more irritated though when they consider one player who both clubs let slip through their fingers. Impressing in the Scottish Championship this season; highly rated youngster Kyle McAllister earned himself a move to Championship side Derby County in January, for an undisclosed fee.

The Scotland youth international, who wowed fans with an outstanding individual goal for St Mirren in November in their 5-1 hammering of Blyth Spartans, is being tipped as one of the next big stars for Scottish football.

How could a youngster with such promise slip past Scotland’s two biggest clubs? Derby County are, without doubt, one of the bigger clubs in the Championship and will certainly have offered St Mirren a good fee and the player good wages, but would they appeal to McAllister over the two Glasgow giants?

With both clubs looking to the future, especially Rangers who are still rebuilding the club after the nightmare few years they’ve endured in Scotland’s lower divisions, will both Celtic and Rangers one day regret letting this promising young Scot move down south?
