Cameron Carter-Vickers is back at Tottenham Hotspur after spending the first half of the season on loan at Sheffield United.

The American centre-back made 17 appearances for the Blades, scoring the winner on his debut against Bolton Wanderers and leaving them inside the Championship playoff positions.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has to juggle his squad over three competitions and Toby Alderweireld is a long-term absentee, so Carter-Vickers may stay in London for the rest of the campaign to provide cover.

Should injuries strike Tottenham hard at the back, will the 20-year-old get his opportunity ahead of Juan Foyth?

Spurs rated Foyth highly enough to spend £8m to sign him from Estudiantes in the summer – fee reported by the Daily Mail – but he has only made four senior appearances this season and none in the Premier League.

Carter-Vickers too only has four senior Spurs appearances to his name, but has now got some valuable first-team experience under his belt, and has also been capped by USA since his last outing for Tottenham, so may jump above Foyth in the pecking order.

Spurs face League Two Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round next Saturday, which will be a good chance for Pochettino to rotate, and also give an idea of which of the young defenders he sees as the better prospect.
