It’s been a difficult season for Derby County supporters. After the disappointment of last season, many Derby fans thought they had made the right move when the club brought in former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson. However, his tenure did not go to plan, and the Rams are now on their third manager of the season, after hiring former Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett, with Steve McClaren the middle man.

However, under Gary Rowett, things appear to be looking up. The former Burton Albion man has quickly become popular amongst Derby fans, and has been told he can change as much as he feels he needs to over the summer. Rowett is likely to bring in a number of new players when the transfer window opens, as well as shipping out a fair few, and he could well open the door to a number of Derby’s exciting youth players.

So which players might be in with a shot? Derby County left-back Max Lowe broke onto the season this season under Steve McClaren, and despite picking up a number of injuries, Rams fans are predicting a big future for the youngster.

Defender Callum MacDonald recently found his way onto the substitutes bench last weekend after impressing for the Derby County U23s, and players like Timi Max Elsnik and Mason Bennett have been at the forefront of Derby’s academy for a while now.

But it is youngster Callum Guy, who has been on loan at League One side Port Vale this season, who has really been catching the eye. The midfielder has become somewhat of a fan favourite amongst Port Vale fans, for his energy and running, and tireless work-ethic in the centre of the park. The kind of qualities Guy has been showing at Port Vale, are arguably exactly what Derby County have lacked this season.

So could the midfielder get a chance next season? At the moment, Derby County have an abundance of central midfielders, including Will Hughes, Jacob Butterfield, Bradley Johnson, George Thorne, Craig Bryson as well as the out-on-loan Jamie Hanson. However, if the summer clear out takes place as expected, players like Callum Guy may well find themselves presented with a big opportunity to be part of Gary Rowett’s push for promotion next season.
