Paul Merson says that Newcastle United are going to try and sign Dele Alli from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, as per his column on Sky Sports.
Alli to Newcastle?
Alli has struggled to make an impact at Tottenham this term, despite being given regular game time by Nuno.
The England international worked hard over pre-season to improve his fitness levels, but he still has not been able to get back to the top of his game.
Alli, in fairness, has had to play in a much deeper midfield role for Tottenham.
But he seems to be lacking the spark that he once had as a younger player.
And Merson now feels that Alli could be in Newcastle’s sights under their new ownership.
“The sort of players Newcastle will be in for in January are Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli,” he said.
“Good players, who will be better than what Newcastle have, but they can’t get into their own teams. What’s that going to win you? Nothing.”
Good signing?
Newcastle certainly would have the funds to buy Alli from Tottenham now.
However, whether he would be the sort of player to really take them to the next level immediately is up for debate.

It is years since Alli looked like one of the very best goalscoring midfielders in the Premier League.
While a fresh start up north could do him good, the Tottenham man has shown little to suggest that he is truly the sort of player Newcastle should be going after under new ownership in recent times.
That being said, if Newcastle could get him back to his best, he would be a wonderful signing.
The Magpies have lacked a goalscoring midfielder this season, even following the arrival of Joe Willock, and Alli could really be an asset in that sense.
