Timo Werner will today complete his move to RB Leipzig, with the reported Newcastle United target signing for his former club on loan from Chelsea.
Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter to confirm that the German international will sign for Leipzig today in a deal that could be a huge blow for Newcastle, who were rumoured to be interested in Werner this summer with Eddie Howe keen to bring in a quality attacker to challenge with Callum Wilson for the starting forward position.
After two years at Chelsea, the Blues are looking to offload the £45m attacker after failing to adapt to the Premier League and becoming a regular source of ridicule and jabs from supporters, rivals and pundits, with a move more than needed for the talented forward.
Despite interest from Newcastle, Werner has opted to return home to Germany with Leipzig, with the striker previously a superstar in the Bundesliga before his doomed move to England with the west London side in 2020, where the attacker scored just 29 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea.
With a reported wage of £270,000-a-week, Werner is one of Chelsea’s highest-paid players and a star who would have broken the wage structure at Newcastle, though given that the Magpies seemingly have an unlimited source of wealth, meeting these demands would have been no real issue.
Indeed, whilst Newcastle would have been a unique change for Werner, the attacker is making a good decision to return to Leipzig and the Bundesliga, with the striker signing to a club in a division where the 26-year-old can hit his peak form ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Newcastle could regret not beating Leipzig to Werner signing

Werner was always going to be an ambitious signing for Newcastle given the stage the Toon are currently at on their road to becoming the next Chelsea of the footballing scene, yet there could still be a twinge of regret from Howe this season if Werner goes on to flourish for Leipzig.
After all, a striker is a must for Newcastle, and Werner could have been perfect, but with Leipzig in the race to sign the striker right from the beginning, the northeast Premier League side seemingly stood no chance in landing the 26-year-old Chelsea outcast.
