Will Aston Villa be awarded the League Cup after Manchester City were charged? Many have been wondering after the Premier League‘s statement.

The Villans lost out to the Citizens in the 2019/20 League Cup final at Wembley, with goals from Sergio Aguero and Rodri cancelling out a strike from Mbwana Ally Samatta.

However, after the Premier League charged Manchester City with over 100 breaches of their financial rules following a four-year investigation, some fans have asked if Aston Villa will retrospectively be awarded the trophy.

So, will Aston Villa be awarded the League Cup? Let’s take a look at what past incidents of a similar nature suggest will happen…

Will Aston Villa be awarded the League Cup?

Well, it certainly seems as if it could happen – based on the famous Calciopoli scandal in Italy involving Juventus and AC Milan.

Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 Serie A title after it was discovered they were involved in match fixing, with four other Italians teams also penalised for attempting to influence results by picking certain referees.

AC Milan finished second that year, but seeing as they were also involved in the scandal, the 2005/06 Serie A title was handed to Inter Milan, despite the fact they finished third, 15 points behind Juventus.

As detailed by the BBC, Juventus appealed to have the title taken away from Inter Milan in 2019, but to this day, it officially belongs to the Nerazzurri.

Therefore, if Manchester City are found guilty of these charges, they could see their trophies rescinded and handed to those they unfairly elbowed out of the way, which would give Aston Villa one more piece of silverware.

As things stand, the Citizens have admitted they are “surprised” by the Premier League’s charges, and state that they “look forward” to putting the matter to bed.

Manchester City seem confident they did no wrong.

However, the Premier League have been investigating the matter across four years, so they are surely confident in their decision to charge Pep Guardiola’s side.

Be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Aston Villa’s trophy cabinet could grow if Manchester City are found guilty of what would be the largest financial scandal in English football history.
