The Newcastle United legend was linked with a management opportunity at the Owls before. Surely there is no better time than now?
Gary Megson was sacked as Sheffield Wednesday boss last night, a move which, well, the whole football world saw coming.
The former Norwich midfielder has never made friends at any of his various clubs in management, see Bolton, Nottingham Forest, or Leicester, and the Wednesday job always seemed too big for him.
Sheffield Wednesday are a true sleeping giant, with one of the biggest fanbases in the football league, and the supporters have had very little to smile about over the last decade and a half.
They deserve an appointment which is inspirational, one which can get fans excited.
Is Alan Shearer that man?
He has long expressed a desire to go into management, and his eight-game spell at Newcastle was too brief and rushed to judge him on.
Shearer was linked with Wednesday before Megson was appointed, but nothing materialised.
Surely if he is serious about management, he has to get back in the dugout sooner rather than later, and Wednesday would be an ideal place for him to cut his teeth.
The club have been through a host of false dawns over the years, and languish in League One.
Sooner or later the club will appoint the right man and the team will win promotion, so why shouldn’t Shearer take a chance to be their saviour.
The post would be relatively out of the spotlight, and if he fails, then he will know he is not cut out for management once and for all, and the club will surely be in a position no worse off.
If he succeeds, he will be an instant hero, and if he fails, well, there’s always the Match of the Day sofa.
