Aaron Lennon has been a household name in English football for quite some time, yet is only 24.
The right-winger made his first professional appearance for Leeds United in 2003 aged just 16.
A transfer to Tottenham followed in 2005 and a bright cameo against Portugal in the 2006 World Cup had England fans believing in a bright future.
Six years on and the winger is not even assured of a place in the Euro 2012 squad.
His best performance for England came against Croatia in 2009, but at World Cup 2010 he was ineffective.
This season has been one which has summed up his career so far.
Blessed with lightening quick pace, he was always rated as a better footballer than Theo Walcott, but the Arsenal player’s brace against Spurs has got fans wondering.
Lennon’s game will live and die by his end product. But he has never scored more than five goals in a season, reaching that number once in 2008-09.
This season he has been hampered by injury, with his most impressive performance scoring twice against QPR late last year.
He has just three assists in the league, compared to ten last year, and he will need to improve that over the coming weeks.
With Spurs ready to splash out on big signings in the summer- Eden Hazard one name mentioned- Lennon’s place on the right of midfield is perceived by fans as one of the most under threat.
Only 24 he has years ahead at the top, but he needs to become more consistent and show there is more to his game than just pace.
Gareth Bale’s rapid progress puts Lennon in the shade, and ideally he would by now have kicked on in the same way as his teammate, given his early breakthrough into the professional game.
With the possibility of a new manager next season, to add to the new signings and fresh ideas, Lennon may have to prove himself all over again.
It may be just what he needs. The next four years will define Lennon’s career and he should be at his peak.
