Speaking live on Sky Sports Now this morning at 10:25 am, former England star Ray Wilkins had his say on the managerial situation at Hull City, claiming that Mike Phelan deserves to be shown more respect from the owners.

Phelan has worked wonders this season for the Tigers, with limited players available at his disposal and the signing of just four players during the transfer window, when it was obvious the squad needed far greater investment to increase their chances of survival in England’s top tier.

They currently sit 12th in the league table, after two wins from their opening five games, and Wilkins believes Phelan has done a magnificent job at the KCOM Stadium.

When asked his view on the Hull owners’ failure to offer the former Manchester United coach a permanent deal, he told Sky Sports:

“I don’t suppose a 4-1 defeat has something to do with it. I just find it totally disrespectful. I think Mike Phelan has handled himself in the most dignified manner right the way through this. He was the natural successor to Steve Bruce. Mike’s done a fantastic job. They should show him a little bit more respect and get the contact signed if they really want him to stay.”

Hull face a challenging week under a continued cloud of uncertainty, with back to back fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

If they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle later on in the season, it will be pivotal for the club’s owners to install stability at the football club, and make a decision on who they want their permeant boss to be, whether that be Mike Phelan or not.
