Cristiano Ronaldo’s showing in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Nigeria last Wednesday has already sparked debate among fans.

While Roberto Martinez is still likely to start the 41-year-old at the World Cup, his role now seems far less straightforward than his reputation might suggest. Portugal keep picking up results, but Ronaldo’s influence is clearly waning.

One recent statistic should give Martinez pause for thought. If the Al-Nassr superstar remains this isolated, Portugal might end up relying on a finisher who is not involved enough to make a difference.

According to Kalshi’s database, Ronaldo has now had fewer touches than the opposing goalkeeper in eight straight matches.

Against Nigeria, he managed just 25 touches in 65 minutes, compared to Maduka Okoye’s 44. In the previous friendly against Chile, SofaScore recorded only 12 touches for Ronaldo in 45 minutes, while Lawrence Vigouroux had 43.

This trend dates back to his final games with Al-Nassr, suggesting it is more than just a recent dip. It looks like a late-career pattern.

Ronaldo appears to have evolved into a pure penalty-box striker, but that role only works if Portugal can consistently supply him with chances.

That is where the concern grows. He had four shots against Nigeria, missed several clear chances and finished the match without a goal, which suggests his reduced involvement may be contributing to the loss of sharpness seen in these warm-up games.

Portugal have enough attacking talent to go deep in the tournament, but Martinez needs to find a way to keep Ronaldo better connected to the play. If not, the team risks turning a legendary figure into a tactical liability.
