Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Mohamed Salah spoke to MBC Masr about his contract negotiations at Anfield.
What’s the story?
Well, the 29-year-old gave an interview to the Egyptian outlet, where he hinted that it’s down to Liverpool to make him feel wanted.
Salah’s contract expires in June 2023, and there is yet to be a breakthrough in negotiations between the prolific forward and the Reds.
Speaking to MBC Masr, the Liverpool No.11 is quoted by Sky Sports: “Your financial value shows how much the club appreciates you and that they are ready to do anything for you to stay.”
In our view, that sounds like a plea to Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for them to step things up in talks over a new contract.
By the sounds of it, there seems to be a stalemate in negotiations, with Salah keen to stay but FSG yet to make him an acceptable offer.
One Liverpool fan below said it’s ’embarrassing’ that Salah even has to say something like that.
Another supporter said this is starting to look similar to the Gini Wijnaldum situation, which saw the Dutchman leave when his contract expired.
Liverpool must keep Mohamed Salah
If FSG contribute to the loss of Salah, the Liverpool fans will never, ever forgive them.
Given what he’s done for the Reds, the ex-Chelsea man deserves to be earning more than any other Premier League player.
At the moment, Salah earns £200,000-a-week at Anfield, and Sky Sports believe he’s happy with life under Jürgen Klopp.
However, he’s only the 17th highest earner in the Premier League, which simply does not reflect his status as Europe’s most in-form attacker.
Even David De Gea finds himself third on the list, earning £375,000-a-week.
If Liverpool can’t at least place him on the same terms as the Spaniard, Salah would probably have a right to complain.
