Leeds United will be hoping that Reece James has an off-day on Friday, but he is one player that Marcelo Bielsa should look at this summer.

On current form, Reece James is arguably the player that Leeds will need to be most worried about when Wigan visit Elland Road looking to put a dent in Marcelo Bielsa’s side’ automatic-promotion hopes.

James is timing his outstanding run of performances perfectly ahead of his expected return to parent club Chelsea at the end of the campaign. And, having spent the majority of the campaign playing at right-back, he is now causing problems in the middle of the park, producing a superb performance against league leaders Norwich last weekend.

If Leeds can stop James on Friday, the Whites will have a fantastic chance of securing a vital three points. But, while Bielsa will be hoping that the youngster has an off-day, James is perhaps the kind of player that Leeds should be closely looking at this summer as he could be a fantastic target – whatever league the Peacocks are in.

According to The Sun last month, Chelsea could consider loaning James out again next season, with Burnley interested in handing him a chance in the top flight.

But given his ability to play at right-back and holding midfield, Leeds should certainly register an interest. Luke Ayling looks to be back to his best, and Bielsa has plenty of options that could provide cover for him. But cover for Kalvin Phillips is arguably proving much more difficult to find.

Adam Forshaw has had great moments throughout the season – his display against Derby emphatically silenced his critics – but his best role is arguably further up the pitch, so signing someone to push Phillips further next season could be an inspired move.

James is now establishing himself as one of the best utility men in the Championship this term, having played all over the defence and in midfield. And if he is available on loan next term, he may be the kind of player that Bielsa should look at adding to his ranks.

But for now, Leeds will be hoping that he looks nothing like a Premier League-bound talent when the Latics visit tomorrow.
