Wigan are determined to tie Nick Powell to a new contract.

Wigan’s soon to be completed takeover is likely to spell bad news for Celtic’s hopes to sign attacker Nick Powell.

Powell has been strongly linked with a move to Celtic with The Scotsman reporting they are planning a January move.

The former Manchester United talent’s contract is up at the end of the season, which would leave Celtic in a strong position to negotiate a deal in January.

Wigan appear set to address this, with a new consortium set to finalise their takeover of the club.

Wigan Today report that the club’s prospective new owners, a Hong Kong based consortium, are making a new contract for Nick Powell a top priority.

This makes sense, to protect the club against losing one of their biggest assets on the cheap.

For Celtic, it is not so good, and means they either face missing out on Powell altogether or will have to pay a substantially higher fee than they had previously planned to.

This season Powell has scored four goals and provided four assists in 15 Championship games for Wigan.
