Portsmouth boss Paul Cook is poised to be named the new Wigan Athletic manager, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

As revealed by HITC Sport earlier this month Cook was in the frame to replace Warren Joyce at the DW Stadium as they look for a new manager to try and help them win promotion back to the Championship next season.

Interim boss Graham Barrow left Wigan on Monday to clear the path for Cook to take charge of the club.

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy at Wigan, but Cook is set to rejoin the club where he had two spells as a player.

Cook has held productive talks with Wigan chairman David Sharpe and the 50-year-old is thought to have impressed the Wigan supremo.

Cook guided Portsmouth to the League Two championship this season after leading them to the play-offs in his first season in charge at Fratton Park.

The 50-year-old is highly-regarded in coaching circles after impressing at Chesterfield before his switch to Portsmouth in the summer of 2015.

Cook led Chesterfield to the League Two title during the 2013/14 season and he followed that up by taking them to the play-offs in League One the following campaign.
