HITC Sport understands Wigan are eyeing a move for the West Ham defender on loan.
West Ham’s Reece Burke in action
West Ham United defender Reece Burke is being lined up for a loan move to Wigan Athletic, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
Burke admitted earlier this week after signing a new deal at West Ham that he might be going out on loan in search of valuable first-team action.
The 19-year-old is highly regarded at West Ham, but he is currently well down the pecking order in Slaven Bilic’s plans and the Hammers boss admitted after their Europa League exit that some players may have to go out on loan to get first-team action.
Bradford City’s Reece Burke and James Meredith celebrate after the final whistle
Burke enjoyed a successful season out on loan at League One Bradford City last season and he was named as the club’s Player of the Season.
West Ham feel Burke’s development would be best served by playing at a higher level than League One this season and feel the Championship is the next stage in the centre-back’s development.
A number of clubs have expressed an interest in taking the England Under-20 international on loan, but Wigan are in pole position to land Burke.
Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell
Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is keen to bolster his side’s defensive options before the close of the window and he sees Burke as being a valuable addition to his plans.
