Although the Latics are struggling in the Championship at present, their captain’s new deal gave many fans reason to celebrate on Christmas Day.

Although Wigan Athletic fans may have not had the best Christmas with regards to their team’s current Championship form, they will surely have enjoyed one particular news story that came out on December 25.

The Latics currently sit 19th in the table, six points clear of the bottom three heading into their Boxing Day fixture away at West Bromwich Albion, a tricky proposition considering the hosts are third in the standings and won their last game 4-0.

While Wigan may not seem in immediate danger, their form over the past few weeks has been poor, with three defeats on the trot prior to Christmas without scoring once, and seven losses in their last 10 games.

Despite their current struggles, club captain Samy Morsy has decided to commit his future to the DW Stadium outfit, signing a new contract which will extend his stay until the end of the 2020-21 season.

The Egypt international has made 20 appearances for Wigan so far this season for an overall tally of 100 since his January 2016 move from Chesterfield (Transfermarkt), and is a fan favourite among the Latics faithful.

Therefore, the club’s announcement of Morsy penning a new contract was well received by many of the fans on Twitter:
