After promotion to the Championship, Wigan are battling hard to stay in the division they worked so hard to reach last season.
Working hard to bolster their promotion push, Wigan boss Gary Caldwell brought in 6 players in January, including Chesterfield midfielder Sam Morsy and Middlesbrough winger Yanic Wildschut.

Losing just two games between January and the end of the season, Wigan Athletic stormed to the top of the table, winning the league and securing promotion to the Championship.

It had been an amazing season for Wigan, and especially for striker Will Grigg, who had finished the season as their top scorer with 25 league goals.

Knowing they would need to strengthen again over the summer, Wigan boss Gary Caldwell worked hard to bring in a further 9 players in the summer, as well as 5 loanees, including Fulham’s Dan Burn and Sunderland’s Jordi Gomez.

Despite the reinforcements, Wigan’s 2016/17 got off to a spluttering start, picking up only two wins across August and September, including a 2-1 victory against Wolves.

After moving to appoint former Manchester United youth coach, Warren Joyce, Wigan’s form has failed to improve, picking up only one win since the change at the top. With 2017 fast approaching, Wigan fans will be hoping their club can recruit well in the transfer window, to ensure they remain in the Championship next season.
