Wigan Athletic striker Gavin Massey has commented on the atmosphere at Elland Road following his side’s 2-1 win over Leeds United on Good Friday.

The Latics winger took his tally for the season to five goals with his brace against the Whites and helped seal a shock result given the visitors were a man down for most of the game.

Indeed, Paul Cook’s charges had fallen behind in the first half shortly after Cedric Kipre was sent off for handball, while Leeds finished the game with 36 shots, 10 on target (Sky Sports).

The Latics edged five points clear of the Championship relegation zone following their triumph at Elland Road, while also keeping Marcelo Bielsa’s side from returning to second place.

“It’s not every weekend you get to play in front of 30,000 fans, where it is deafening and you can’t really hear your own teammates,” Massey told the official Wigan website.

“But to put in a performance like that especially with ten men is unbelievable… there’s no better place to come and pick up another away win.”

Wigan Athletic's Gavin Massey scores his side's second goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Wigan Athletic at Elland Road on April 19, 2019 in Leeds, England.

Massey’s comments about the atmosphere at Elland Road and esteem in which he holds Leeds in terms of what it means to win there will no doubt be appreciated by the club’s fans.

However, there’s also an inconvenient truth within his comments – they’re testament to how opposition teams, particularly those at the wrong end of the table, will up their game considerably when they take on the Whites, particularly on their home patch.

As such, it is important that, whatever division they’re in next season, Leeds must strengthen appropriately – in this case, up front – and always be on top of their game to ensure they don’t fall short, especially against teams against which they’re deemed favourites.
