Leeds United failed to win against Wigan Athletic in the Championship on Sunday.
Leeds United have ended their season on a disappointing note. The Whites have drawn their final game of the 2016-17 Championship campaign 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic away from home.
Ryan Tunnicliffe put Wigan in the lead at the DW Stadium after just six minutes, and Chris Wood restored parity for Leeds from the penalty spot only five minutes into the second half.
The result means that the Whites finish the season in seventh place with 75 points from 46 matches, five points behind sixth-placed Fulham.
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan was following the match, and he has given his take on Garry Monk’s side’s performance against the Latics.
“The first half was disappointing and lacked intensity – it was about salvaging that and giving the team the chance to save themselves,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “And they did – but Leeds can’t keep turning up for 45 minutes. We say that every single week.
“By being really positive and driving into space, O’Kane wins a penalty – any kind of contact in that area gives you a chance of a spot kick.
“Leeds have not had that many 90 minute performances this season – if they had, they’d be in the play offs,” added Whelan. “It’s often the other way round – you enter with adrenaline and you leave shattered.
“Wigan didn’t pack loads of bodies forward but their counter-attacking style hurt. They often make one incisive pass to hurt teams. “
Over the course of the 90 minutes at the DW Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hosts Wigan had 41% of the possession, took nine shots of which three were on target, and earned one corner, according to BBC Sport.
Visitors Leeds had 59% of the possession, took 17 shots of which three were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.
