Felix Wiedwald joined Leeds United in the summer transfer window.
Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald has made mistakes on more than one occasion this season, and there are doubters among the Elland Road faithful.
Signed from Werder Bremen in the summer transfer window, the 27-year-old goalkeeper has struggled with crosses and shots on a number of occasions in the Championship this season, and has been criticised severely by the Leeds fans (click here, here and here to read more).
The German gave away a needless goal against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road earlier this month and made it a bit harder for Leeds to win the league fixture.
The former Germany Under-20 international, though, played well in the Whites’ 1-0 win against Norwich City at Elland Road in the league last weekend.
Wiedwald has outlined just how much scrutiny goalkeepers are always under and told The Yorkshire Evening Post: “I don’t really read the newspapers.
“Last week I made a big mistake but now in the last game I did very well with the saves. This is the job of a goalkeeper. It’s always up and down.
“If I was a striker and three times I miss the target and then I hit the target one time, I’m the hero. If a goalkeeper makes a mistake it’s always a goal.”
Wiedwald’s comments should remind the Leeds fans just how hard it is for a goalkeeper.
As the German says, a striker can miss three chances and get away with it, but if he commits an error as a goalkeeper, then it ends up costing his team.
Goalkeepers, like defenders, midfielders and strikers, do make mistakes, and maybe Leeds fans should cut the 27-year-old some slack.
