It’s very early days but Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks on course to have his best-ever season for Everton.

The former Sheffield United hitman scored 13 Premier League goals during the whole of last season.

But two league games into the 2020-21 campaign and Calvert-Lewin already has four goals under Carlo Ancelotti – including a hat-trick.

On this form, the 23-year-old could be a stunning frontman for the Toffees this season, but Ancelotti wants more from him.

Speaking to a pre-match press conference, the Italian said: “He has a possibility to improve his matches, his quality. But he has the quality & where he can improve is in consistency. With James in Madrid, Ronaldo scored 56 goals. I’m honestly not going to ask Dominic to score 56 but he has to try to do his best.”

And Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes that the legendary Italian coach – who has won the Champions League on three occasions – is trying to motivate Calvert-Lewin to keep his foot on the pedal and not rest on his laurels.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Shearer said: “You look at Ancelotti and think ‘Why is he saying that?’ He’s obviously looked at the character he’s got in Calvert-Lewin and thinks ‘Can he handle that if I come out and say that? Is he the type to shy away?’ He doesn’t strike me as that. He strikes me as the person who will thrive on that and get great confidence from that.”

Everton are away to Crystal Palace this afternoon and it’ll be fascinating to see whether the young Englishman can maintain this red-hot streak.

With someone like James Rodriguez supplying him, you wouldn’t back against him.
