Olivier Giroud is a man whose confidence looks drained, and he freshly admits that. He has failed to find the net in his opening three games for Arsenal, and was even booed off by the France fans in the country’s midweek international.
But there is hope on the horizon. Why?
Arsenal face Southampton this weekend, and it appears history and potentially even fate, is on their side.
The Saints have a history of conceding to new Arsenal strikers, and four of the best strikers in recent Arsenal history have all opened their accounts against them.
Here is the proof:
1) Ian Wright – Back in 1991 Ian Wright scored his first league goal for Arsenal against Southampton. He followed it up with two more, scoring a hat-trick.
2) Dennis Bergkamp – In 1996 Bergkamp had played five matches for Arsenal and was still to score. Then Southampton visited Highbury, and the Dutch master scored twice in a 4-2 victory.
3) Thierry Henry – Arsenal’s all time record goalscorer, Thierry Henry failed to score in his first nine matches. He opened his account away to Southampton in 1999, scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory.
4) Robin van Persie – He is not a popular man among Arsenal fans nowadays, but he sure was when his first Premier League goal was scored against, you guessed it, Southampton, ensuring a 1-1 draw in 2004.
So there you have it, surely irrefutable proof that Oliver Giroud is destined to score tomorrow, all he has to do is turn up right?
