Don Hutchison has told ESPN that he feels Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is waiting for the Liverpool job, after being asked about becoming Tottenham Hotspur’s next manager.
Tottenham are still in the hunt to hire a long-term replacement for Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese was fired by Daniel Levy a couple of weeks ago.
The Liverpool icon has just ended Rangers’ 10-year wait for a Premiership league title by masterminding a sublime season at Ibrox, with the Gers 23 points clear of Celtic.
Earlier this year, Gerrard himself prompted speculation that he would indeed love to return to Anfield as manager when he refused to rule it out at some point in the future.
And Hutchison believes that the Liverpool job is a much better fit, claiming that the idea of being hired by Tottenham wouldn’t and shouldn’t appeal to him.
He told ESPN: “I think he’s waiting for the Liverpool job. Just leave him at Rangers, let him win another title and just when the time is right I think he’ll come back to Liverpool. Why would you take Spurs? He ain’t going to get anywhere at Spurs. Harry Kane will be off by the time he gets there. Son might be off. I don’t see that bit.”
The good news for Rangers is that there hasn’t been a great deal of speculation about Gerrard getting the Tottenham job.
Instead, the Lilywhites are focused on a lot more experienced figures like Brendan Rodgers, Erik Ten Hag and Antonio Conte – the latter of whom has reportedly been in contact with Levy.
Winning the Scottish Premiership is a big achievement, but it isn’t substantial enough to get you a huge job like the Tottenham one.
