Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live (12/10/20 at 8:35 pm) that the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ won’t allow wealthy owners to takeover Newcastle if recent proposals are pushed through.

The Telegraph claimed that Manchester United and Liverpool are driving a potentially major shake-up of English football, with some ideas pushing towards more power being given to the ‘big six’.

It has understandably been met with disdain and disapproval by most because of the negative impact this can have on the English football pyramid.

Over the summer, talks of Newcastle being taken over reached boiling point before the kettle was switched off and Sutton thinks clubs like the North East outfit won’t be able have such owners in the future because of these proposals.

“They are not going to let anybody else in,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “They are just going to let themselves get more powerful and stronger, aren’t they?

“Nobody from the outside is going to be allowed in. A wealthy takeover, for argument’s sake, at Newcastle. A wealthy owner, the possibility of someone coming in who could actually challenge financially, this top six.

“They won’t let that happen. Why would they? I think we all understand the situation and they may say that’s business. We understand that they are trying to drive their business’ on but if, for the greater good of football, this cannot be the only option. They have to come up with another.”

Whilst Mike Ashley put his hand in his pocket this summer, for most parts he is an owner that has never seen eye to eye with the city of Newcastle.

Those at St James’ Park will be hoping it’s a matter of time before he sells the club, so they can try to be more ambitious in the long run.

Newcastle have suffered two relegations under his stewardship and if proposals such as the one above are accepted then it’ll only result in more misery for fans such as the ones in the North East.
