With the FA Cup on the horizon, there’s plenty of reasons for Wolverhampton Wanderers to take the competition seriously this year.
It’s fair to say that the 2016/17 season has been a turbulent one so far where Wolverhampton Wanderers are concerned. However, there should be room for hope and optimism as Lambert’s men prepare for a tough FA Cup trip to face Premier League side Stoke City.
Wolves are historically one of the worst sides in the top two divisions when it comes to cup competitions, with their best performance in either since the turn of the century being a quarter-final appearance in the League Cup.
Wolves’ fans celebrate their second goal
Alas, in the modern day we have seen plenty of unusual events take place in the world of football and stranger things have certainly happened. When it comes to the club’s focus, the play-offs already appear to be out of reach and they look set for another year of mid-table mediocrity.
That’s where the FA Cup comes in. If Wolves want to sustain a challenge in this competition, they need to utilise their entire squad and as we all know it’s a pretty big one. Many players have been the victim of rotation this season, but this could be a tournament in which it is welcomed by supporters.
General view – Britannia Stadium
It gives a chance for some of the talented fringe players to combine with the more experienced stars in the side. Whilst Stoke are a good team, Wolves have more than enough quality to cause them problems and given what they’ve been through in the last few years they deserve a cup run to get excited about.
They shouldn’t have to wait until next year when the pressure on them to gain promotion will be through the roof. Give supporters something to cheer and hold on to this season.
