Newcastle United will have to pay £16m to sign Rondon from West Brom, which should give Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers an idea.
Whether Salomon Rondon will be a Newcastle United player next season is anyone’s guess.
The striker has been a hit at St James’ Park since he arrived on loan from West Bromwich Albion last summer, scoring six Premier League goals including a crucial strike against Manchester City while providing a much-needed physical presence in attack.
The Northern Echo, however, reports that West Brom will demand £16 million if Newcastle want to keep Rondon on Tyneside. And it is understood that Mike Ashley could need some persuading before he splashes out an eight-figure sum on a striker who will turn 30 this year.
Interestingly, the report adds that another Premier League club had expressed an interest in signing Rondon last month. Their identity remains unknown for now, Wolverhampton Wanderers could certainly do with a player like Rondon.
They would certainly fit the bill. In Raul Jimenez, Wolves only have one natural centre-forward and Rondon is exactly the sort of striker Nuno likes; strong, mobile and capable of leading the line on his own while bringing the wingers and midfielders into play.
Nuno, after all, has worked effectively with the likes of Alvaro Negredo, Vincent Aboubakar, Jimenez and Leo Bonatini. Rondon would not look out of place in his lone-striker system.
A striker will be high on Wolves’ wish list this summer and, if Newcastle cannot afford Rondon, they could do a lot worse than targeting the big man.
